Meet Our Team
Melanie Richardson accidentally found her passion for senior care and service when her own family was seeking help in finding care for a loved one. She remembers clearly feeling overwhelmed, helpless and hopeless. All Melanie wanted in that stressful time was to have someone put their arms around her, give some reassurance and give information specific to their situation. Because there was not any one place for folks to go for this kind of help at that time, she ended up being handed a 2″ thick directory book that was definitely not helpful. The last thing families need is a book of things that they don’t understand. Directories don’t help people; people should help people.
It was that experience that lit a fire in Melanie that lasts to this day. She went on a one woman crusade to better educate herself as to what resources were available in her neighborhood. To that that end, Melanie helped open one of the very first assisted living communities in Solano County in 1998. At that community, Melanie truly found her calling. She became a sponge and joyfully emersed herself in learning about all things related to the continuum of care for seniors. Melanie still continues to remember fondly her time at that community and can likely tell you stories about every resident and family that ever came through the door there.
Even though she loved her work at the assisted living community, Melanie knew that there was a gap in service in Solano for folks who were seeking answers, and not necessarily just a housing solution. In 2004, Helping Hands Senior Resources was formed so that there would be one place for seniors and their families to go for information, love and support. Now, 20 plus years down the road from her start in senior care, Melanie stills has a passion to serve the families of her community. She is proud to say that her adult daughters have also been bitten by the senior love bug and they too are committed to the services of seniors and their families in the community.
Kelsey Spencer is Melanie’s daughter, and shares Melanie’s passion for helping seniors and their families. Kelsey worked as a Resource Specialist for Helping Hands from 2011-2015 before graduating college and entering the nonprofit world as an Executive Assistant and eventually launched a career as a Grant Writer and Project Manager. Kelsey was excited to return to Helping Hands in April 2022 as Director of Operations with the goal of growing the business in order to help even more local families and seniors!
